Department of Physics

Dr. Richard Wiener has been a faculty member at Pacific since Fall 1995. His research expertise is in the fields of chaos, nonlinear pattern formation, and fluid mechanics. Since 1995 Dr. Wiener has recieved over $150,000 in external grants to fund his research. This provides a great opportunity for Pacific students to receive support for advanced research. Each summer he works with three undergraduate researchers who are supported with a generous stipend and housing. These collaborations have led to nine undergraduates co-authoring research articles with Dr. Wiener that have been published in prestigious physics journals. Most recently, Dr. Wiener published an article entitled "Control of Chaotic Pattern Dynamics in Taylor Vortex Flow" with four undergraduate researchers in the September 20, 1999 edition of Physical Review Letters. Dr. Wiener is very active in curriculum development and is a fellow of OCEPT (the Oregon Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers). Dr. Wiener also teaches Optics in Pacific University's College of Optometry. His hobbies include hiking, tennis, basketball, biking, swimming, reading, and movies.
