Summer Research and Internship Opportunities

The department receives a huge amount of mail advertising a wide range of summer research opportunities. We have collected all the mail together into a folder, which you may borrow from Dr. Hall.

Most of these programs have application deadlines around Jan-Feb, so you should act quickly.

The NSF REU program is one of the major sources of summer research jobs, and you should see their web site for more information. You can use the following link to search their extensive listing of current summer research opportunities:

The following list of selected opportunities is culled from materials from the '01-'02 year, but many places have programs every summer, so these links may still be useful:

  • Summer Opportunities at the Associated Western Universities. Many links for summer and academic internships.

  • Geneva, Switzerland - Deadline: ASAP... applications will be reviewed starting January 21 and will continue accepting applications while positions last.

  • CalTech Jet Propulsion Laboratory - MURF round-trip travel to Pasadena and housing paid, $500/week stipend, 8-10 week program. Juniors only, Sophomores on case-by-case basis. Deadline: FEBRUARY 1!!

  • Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory - Deadline: FEBRUARY 12

  • University of Florida 10 week program [May 28 - Aug 2], $3800 stipend, pre-paid housing, travel reimbursement. In addition to practical research, there will be lectures and tours of North & Central Florida's research facilities. Deadline: FEBRUARY 15!!

  • Chip Camp! This is a week long (expense paid) experience [June 16 - June 23] covering the chemistry and physics of microelectric devices. Make your own LED. Deadline is FEBRUARY 15!!

  • Ohio State - June 17 - August 23, $4180 total stipend, single room @ Ohio State provided. Deadline: FEBRUARY 15!!

  • NSF - UofO Research Experience Dealine: FEBRUARY 15!!

  • Southestern Association for Research in Astronomy - $500 for travel, $3000 stipendDeadline: FEBRUARY 15 (5 pm EST)

  • There are opportunities for summer internship and fellowships at US Department of Energy Labs. The web site for the program is www.scied.science.doe.gov . The deadline is FEBRUAARY 17!!

  • University of Michigan - [May 29 - August 2] Deadline: FEBRUARY 19!!

  • Brigham Young University - $2918 stipend, travel, allowance for room & board, selected student will travel to a regional APS meeting to present results. Deadline: FEBRUARY 25

  • University of Washington (Seattle) - 10 week [June 24 - August [30], $3300 stipend, $500 for travel, housing in dorm, 2 meals a day. Deadline: MARCH 1!!

  • The Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Tennessee. 10 weeks, $400 travel stipend, $350/week, housing available at $66/week. Deadline: MARCH 1.

  • University of Alabama 10 weeks [June 3 - August 9], $3500 stipend + housing, several opportunities, Deadline: MARCH 1!!

  • NSF - LEHIGH UNIVERSITY 10 weeks, $385/week, Free housing, Begins in June, several opportunities. deadline: MARCH 7!!

  • Ploy Camp! A week-long [June 23 - June 30], all expenses paid, experience provides undergraduates with the necessary background to understand the language and technology of the polymer industry and the important role chemists play in its future. Application deadline is APRIL 1!!
